About
Cameron Main Street
Founded in 2019
Cameron Main Street, Inc. is a local non-profit organization dedicated to the economic revitalization and community development of historic downtown Cameron, Missouri. Working directly with the Missouri Main Street Connection, our group utilizes a strategic, preservation-based economic development approach to support traditional merchants and recruit new small businesses. Our purpose centers on preserving the city's unique architectural heritage while creating a vibrant, beautiful district where residents and visitors want to shop, work, and live. Additionally, Cameron Main Street, Inc. fosters strong public-private partnerships and hosts massive community traditions, including the Fourth of July Freedom Festival and the Christmas Festival of Lights, to drive regional tourism and boost civic pride.
Cameron Main Street, Inc. got its start as part of a grassroots movement to preserve and revitalize the town’s historic business district, following a pattern common to many historic railroad towns in Missouri. While the town itself was founded in 1855, the need for a dedicated Main Street program emerged much later due to a shifting economy.
For generations, the intersection of Walnut and Third Streets was Cameron's primary economic engine. However, the construction of U.S. Route 36 and Interstate 35 on the edges of town eventually pulled major commercial interest and traffic away from the historic center.
To protect the unique architectural heritage of the downtown core—such as the historic buildings surrounding McCorkle Park—local business owners, residents, and civic leaders banded together. They formed Cameron Main Street, Inc. as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to directly combat downtown vacancy.
Cameron Main Street, Inc. gained structural traction by partnering with the Missouri Main Street Connection. By adopting the national Main Street Four-Point Approach® (Organization, Promotion, Design, and Economic Vitality), the program shifted from a simple volunteer group to a formalized economic development powerhouse.
Today, this volunteer-led board works alongside with the residents, the many wonderful organizations in Cameron, and the city government to ensure that the original heart of the town remains a vibrant economic asset rather than just a piece of history.
